DATING: MAINTAINING BOUNDARIES AS A YOUNG CHRISTIAN

KEEPING THE LINES VISIBLE

Lola had been looking forward to Friday all week. She was meeting Daniel at a small ice cream shop, and they were finally going to have some time to chat. From the moment they sat down, everything felt natural. They laughed, shared stories, and Lola realised she hadn’t felt this comfortable with anyone in a long time.

Then, Daniel leaned in slightly as he offered her a spoonful, and a little bit of ice cream landed on her lips. He reached over to wipe it away. His hand lingered a little longer than she expected. That familiar flutter hit her stomach. She smiled, hoping he wouldn’t notice, but her mind was racing: “Is this just chemistry… or am I letting things go too far?”

When Lines Start to Blur

When you’re single, your standards are strong. You know what you believe. You know your limits. You’re confident about what you will and will not tolerate.

Then you meet someone who seems aligned. He loves God. She serves in the church. He talks about growth and purpose. Everything is giving a green flag! And slowly, what once felt black-and-white begins to feel… flexible.

Spending more time alone than you planned. Letting conversations become more intimate. Physical affection is increasing because “we’re serious” and “we’re heading somewhere.”

Until one day, you realise you’ve drifted further than you intended. This is the part we don’t talk about enough. Enforcing boundaries after emotions are involved can feel uncomfortable. Saying, “I’m not comfortable with this,” can change the mood. And sometimes, we hesitate because we’re afraid it might cost us the relationship.

That fear is real.

If a relationship cannot survive healthy boundaries, it may not be aligned in the first place. Someone who truly respects you will respect your convictions, even if they don’t fully understand them at first.

Boundaries Are Your Best Friend

A lot of us make the mistake of thinking that setting boundaries means we don’t trust someone. That it’s too spiritual or overly rigid. But the truth is, boundaries are not about you not trusting the other person or yourself; they’re about wisdom.

Think about it like guardrails on a road or on a flight of stairs. No one puts them there because they expect to crash. They’re there because people know what can happen when you get too close to the edge. The same is true in relationships.

Boundaries give you room to grow without constantly putting yourself in situations that might confuse you or make you compromise. They exist to protect the connection you’re building and, more importantly, to protect yourself.

Sometimes it’s as simple as knowing when to pull back from certain conversations or being honest with yourself about how quickly you’re getting attached.

When dating with purpose, boundaries are like a map. They don’t restrict your journey; they help you reach your destination without unnecessary detours or crashes.

Dating with Purpose Isn’t Pressure

Dating with purpose doesn’t mean turning every conversation into a marriage interview. It doesn’t mean you can’t laugh, enjoy someone’s company, or feel butterflies. You’re human. Of course, you’ll feel things. That doesn’t mean you’re failing at Christianity.

Purpose simply means you know where you’re headed, and you’re not willing to trade your convictions for a moment of closeness. It’s choosing clarity over confusion and long-term peace over short-term gratification.

Will you always get it right? Probably not. There may be moments you wish you handled differently. But the goal isn’t perfection; it’s awareness. It’s choosing wisely, even when it’s hard.

Dating with purpose is simply moving forward with intention, trusting God, honouring your convictions, and protecting something that could one day become sacred.

Thank you so much for this. It has really helped as I now know that it’s not about perfection but awareness. I think it can also be applied to friendships and other relationships.

Anyone who pushes guilt trips you into doing what you personally want to do, or what you know is against your morals, is indeed short term gratification. Even if you two may seem fine, the day you want to retrace your step and do what you know is right, is going to be a difficult day in that relationship. The other party may try to manipulate you or question “why start now”. But its good to stand firm on your belief and trust that the Holy Spirit will help you navigate that phase. But while at it know that it can end up in two ways. Either a separation or an understanding. Whatever the outcome is, trust God’s plan for you and believe you will find the person God has destined for you.
