SUBMISSION IN THE HOME: WHAT IT’S NOT.

WE KNOW WHAT SUBMISSION IS; LET’S FIND OUT WHAT IT IS NOT

If you’ve spent even five minutes on social media recently, you’ve probably stumbled across heated debates about submission. On one side, you have the “independent woman” camp fiercely rejecting the idea entirely. A recent wedding even had the bride warning the MC not to mention anything related to submission at her reception because her friends were coming from abroad. In her words, “We don’t do submission here.” On the other hand, you have self-proclaimed “alpha males” demanding absolute control as the “man of the house.”

While people argue over who is right, real marriages are living through the consequences of these misunderstandings. In the midst of this noise, a tired wife is on her knees praying for her husband after discovering, for the umpteenth time, that he has been unfaithful while continuing to wound her with his words and actions. Another woman is told to “keep quiet” during a family relocation discussion because a submissive wife shouldn’t question her husband.

These stories are everywhere, and they all revolve around the same question: What does biblical submission really mean?

Somewhere along the line, we’ve allowed culture and broken human opinions to define this word more than the Scripture does. We’ve equated submission with silence and unquestioning agreement, but that is a far cry from God’s design.

Submission Begins with God

One of the biggest misconceptions about submission is believing that it is first about a husband. It isn’t.
Submission is first about God.

Ephesians 5:22 says, “Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.” That last phrase changes everything. Biblical submission is ultimately an act of vertical obedience to God before it is a horizontal response to a man.

Jesus Himself demonstrated this. Philippians 2 tells us that He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death. His submission to the Father wasn’t a reflection of inferiority but of perfect obedience. If Christ’s submission reflected ultimate strength, then biblical submission cannot be a symbol of weakness.

What Biblical Submission Looks Like (And What It Is Not)

Imagine a couple praying about a major career move. The wife has spent days researching the target city, looking into schools for the children, and checking out local churches. She respectfully presents a detailed breakdown of her concerns.

Far from being an act of rebellion, this is what a healthy marriage partnership looks like.

From the very beginning, God described the woman as a “helper” suitable for the man (Genesis 2:18). A helper is not a spectator or a silent observer but an active partner. God often brings wisdom through both husband and wife. Scripture describes the virtuous woman as discerning, industrious, and wise, not an empty-headed robot.

To put things in perspective, let’s be clear about what submission is not:

  • It is not slavery: God never created marriage to resemble a master-servant dynamic. Of course, biblical submission can never be separated from biblical leadership. The same passage that calls wives to submit also calls husbands to love their wives as Christ loved the Church, which is sacrificially, selflessly, and unconditionally.
  • It is not agreeing with sin: Our highest allegiance is always to God. As Acts 5:29 reminds us, we ought to obey God rather than men.
  • It is not enduring abuse: God never endorses cruelty. Abuse is a distortion of the covenant, not an expression of it.

Shaping the Spirit of the Home

Submission does not eliminate conversations, nor does it mean the woman can’t have an opinion in the home.

Look at Abigail in 1 Samuel 25. Her husband, Nabal, was acting foolishly, and she respectfully but courageously stepped in to prevent a massacre. Her wisdom preserved lives, and God honoured her for it.

Think about an orchestra. A violin, a piano, and a trumpet all have different roles, yet none is more valuable than the other. Harmony isn’t created when every instrument plays the same part, but when each one fulfils its role while working toward the same goal. In the same way, God’s design for marriage isn’t about superiority or inferiority; it’s about unity and partnership.

A husband lovingly leads by serving, and a wife willingly honours that leadership as unto the Lord.

Over to You!

The greatest picture of submission was never meant to be found in cultural traditions or internet debates. It was found at Calvary, where Jesus submitted to the Father’s plan to win us back. If submission was the very pathway through which God brought salvation to the world, maybe it isn’t a concept to fear after all.

So, let’s talk in the comments:

Let’s talk about how submission looks in real life. Where do you think the biggest disconnect is today? Have you ever seen biblical submission modelled in a way that actually made a marriage beautiful, or do you think the modern world has made it too difficult to practise? Drop your thoughts below!

I believe marriage is to be modelled according to the scriptures with total surrender and love. The world has become so rowdy and noisy.

There is a need to bury ourselves in the living word of God this day.

Truly, submission is first unto God before man. But humans has turned it upside down to make it happen thier own way.

Submission is not even meant to be from the woman alone because Ephesians 5:21 clearly states that Christians have to submit to one another IN THE FEAR OF THE LORD.

Submission doesn’t connote slavery.

God will help our understanding.

Submission is not slavery. Genuine love poses submission to both husband and wife.

Thank you so much for this topic.
My take on submission is that the world is too noisy, listening to all things except the WORD. We want to live and please the world.
To the subject of Submission, the greatest disconnect is the WORD, Like papa will always say, to be worthless is to be wordless. If only we can live by the word, and not filter it or want to please others with it, by what’s trending on social media and around us.

Well, Submission, is a thing of total surrendering to an authority, not as a form of inferiority. I think the problem of the world will be, everyone want to be the head, they twist God’s word on submission and marriage, hence marriage issues is on the high side. Wives and husbands are always fighting, why, they don’t know their place on submission, as given by God. For me, the modern world has changed submission, there’s feminism, and alpha male here and there, If we can only feed ourselves with the right piece, it won’t be a problem for us to submit. Submission is very much still possible in this time and forever will be, It just lies on what we feed on (THE WORD)

Submission is made by sub and mission
Getting under another’s mission
Sailing under the captaincy of a lead.
Jesus Christ is the lead and we submit to His mission
Hosanna
